South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team notched its third straight win Thursday night by defeating Combine Academy-CLT, 88-74.

“This was the most balanced game we’ve had so far,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “I think we played much better defensively tonight.”

The Hawks (3-0) led 47-26 at halftime and stretched the lead to 27 points in the opening minutes of the second half. Combine Academy chipped away at the lead, capped off by an 8-0 run late in the second half to get to within nine points. The Hawks outscored Combine Academy 9-4 over the final 3:45 to pull away for the win.

Five players scored in double figures for SGSC, led by Zaquavian Smith with 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. McKinley Chambless had 14 points and three rebounds, followed by DJ Bryant with 12 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Shaquille Williams finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and one assist, and Zaire Cook rounded out the top scorers with a double-double of 10 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

The Hawks’ current homestand concludes Saturday afternoon as they host TAAG Academy. Tip for the game is set for 4 p.m.
