Mr. Melvin Ben Higgs, age 102 years old from Axson, Ga., passed away Friday, April 9, 2021 at his home following an extended illness.  

 

A native of Waycross, Ga., Mr. Higgs was born, November 22, 1918, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha and Sarah Ann Bagley Higgs.  He was a farmer and pulpwood producer who worked hard all his life and took great pride and joy in hunting, fishing, and providing for his family, whom he deeply loved.  He was a member of Millwood Baptist Church and also attended Indian Mound Church.  Mr. Higgs was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of WWII.  He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters, along with his wife: Mrs. Pearlie Mae Johns Higgs, one son:  C.J. Higgs and three grandsons:  Joseph Nguyen, Carl Stalvey and Wesley Higgs.

 

Survivors include: 


Son:  Bruce Higgs and wife, Annette of Axson, Ga.

 

Daughters:  Sandra Ursrey and husband, Travis of Axson, Ga.

                     Janet Tindall and husband, Lawrence of Axson, Ga.

                     Melvine Stevens and husband, Donald of Axson, Ga.

 

Sister:  Loretta Welch of Waycross, Ga.

 

13 Grandchildren, 23 Great-Grandchildren, 7 Great-Great Grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.


Funeral services for Mr. Higgs were held Monday, April 12, 2021 at 4:00 P.M. at Millwood Baptist Church with Rev. Clayton Davis and Rev. Melvin Burch officiating.  Special musical selections included, “You Raise Me Up” by cd and “Precious Memories” rendered by Regina Delk and Kandy Thrift accompanied by Harriett Youngblood at the piano.  Soft music for the Prelude and Postlude was provided by pianist, Harriett Youngblood.  The interment followed in Little Utah Cemetery in Axson, Ga. with Military Honors provided by a U.S. Marine Corp Honor Guard from Albany, Ga. 

 

Serving as active pallbearers were:  Greg Vickers, Gary Vickers, Perry Thompson, Ray Thompson, Ricky Musgrove and Michael Hardee.

 

Relihan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
