Featured Qualifying closes for Douglas and Broxton elections, long-time commissioner chooses not to seek re-election

The slate of candidates for the Douglas and Broxton elections is set. And there’s a little intrigue on both ballots.

In the Douglas election, Mayor Tony Paulk is running unopposed. Current Ward 3 commissioner Olivia Pearson opted not to run again. Voters in that ward will have a choice to make. Two candidates, Gregory Batts and Tony Paulk II, signed up to run. Paulk II is Mayor Tony Paulk’s nephew.

The other two commissioners on the ballot will return to office. Commissioners Kentaiwon Durham (Ward 2) and Steve Bailey (6) have no opposition.

In Broxton, incumbent Mayor Jimmy Littleton will have opposition from current council member and mayor pro-tem Carlos Wilkerson. Five individuals, three of whom are incumbents, qualified for the four council seats. Incumbents Ruth Christian, Helen Jones, and Bill Whiddon qualified to seek another term. Challengers Wanda Kirschbaum and Gregory Zachary also qualified. The top four candidates will take their seats on the city council. The council member who receives the most votes will be mayor pro-tem.

Both elections take place in November.
