South Georgia State College President Dr. Virginia Carson announced today the appointment of Lawton "Bud" Drew to the position of Assistant Dean of Students.  Drew began his work at SGSC July 1.

A well-known and successful athletic coach within the southeast Georgia area, Drew comes to SGSC from Coffee Middle School where he served as assistant principal.  Prior to Coffee Middle, Drew was athletic director, assistant principal, and wrestling coach at Coffee High School for 11 years.  He was named Region 1-AAAAA Athletic Director of the Year four times during his years at Coffee High.  Other teaching and coaching assignments included schools in Appling and Ware Counties.

Drew's responsibility at SGSC will be to administer several aspects of the student success division, including student conduct and the athletics department, which includes baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, and swimming.

"I'm excited to have the chance to work at the collegiate level," said Drew.  "I'm even more excited to have the opportunity to help our students and student-athletes reach their highest potential."

Carson believes Drew's previous experience and passion for helping young people will serve SGSC well.

"South Georgia State College is dedicated to providing a positive experience for our students, whether it be in the classroom or in athletic competition," she said.  "I look forward to the many contributions Mr. Drew will bring to the college in this regard."

Drew holds a bachelor's degree in health and physical education, a master's degree in education, and a specialist's degree in educational administration and supervision – all from Valdosta State University.  He grew up in Douglas and played baseball for the former South Georgia College from 1978-1980.

Drew and his wife, Donna, live in Douglas.  They have three sons – Randy, Stuart, and Aaron.
