The student organization known as the National FFA Organization is known for its ability to develop agricultural leaders through various opportunities inside as well as outside the classroom. These opportunities can be as sophisticated as winning a state Career Development Event (CDE) to showing various species of livestock at fairs and shows across our state, to even simply helping out on the family farm or in the school garden. Each of these opportunities help these students develop their potential for "premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education."

One of the opportunities the FFA members at George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) had to further develop these skills was to strive for and received their Greenhand FFA Degree for the 2016-2017 school year. The Greenhand FFA Degree is a degree designed for first year (freshmen) agriculture students who have in place or plans for a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) as well as demonstrate basic knowledge of FFA such as: Parliamentary procedure skills, public speaking, FFA emblem and official dress.

The Greenhand FFA Degree is the first official FFA Degree a FFA member can earn. To commemorate their accomplishment they will be awarded a bronze Greenhand degree pin. The choice for bronze was to symbolize the hardiness and endurance of this precious metal that will help the student be hardy and endure through our organization. Just like there are more rare and precious metals, there are more precious laurels to be obtained through FFA for these student leaders to obtain.

To confer this degree upon these FFA members a Greenhand Degree Induction ceremony was held at GWCFC at the March FFA Meeting. Through this ceremony FFA members dipped their hand in green paint and placarded their accomplishment on ceiling tiles to be placed in the FFA sponsor's, Mr. Spencer Highsmith's, Agricultural classroom to further encourage future FFA members to strive for and obtain the Greenhand FFA Degree.
