Mrs. Devote Davis Mizell, age 94 of Axson, Ga. passed away, Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Baptist Village in Waycross, Ga., following an extended illness.  

 

 

Born in Atkinson County on May 29, 1928, daughter of Harley and Rosa Lee Vickers Davis, Mrs. Mizell made her home in Axson where she raised her family alongside her husband.  She worked many years as a bus driver and office worker with the Atkinson County School System.   

 

 

Mrs. Mizell was of the Baptist faith and a longtime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and guests, but most importantly she spent her time making memories with her family and especially, her grandchildren and will always be known as their beloved granny.  Mrs. Mizell was preceded in death, along with her parents, by her brothers, Thomas, Melvin and Buck Davis, and her sister, Rose Mary Oliff.

Sons:  H.F. Mizell and wife, Delores of Axson, Ga.

Roger Mizell of Axson, Ga.

 

 

Daughter:  Janie Bottomley and husband, Roy of Duluth, Ga.

 

 

Sisters:  Margaret Grantham and husband, Jimmy of Willacoochee, Ga.

Edith Cavelle Solvang of Douglas, Ga.

Simmeon Gillis of Axson, Ga.

 

 

8 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great Grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, also survive.

 

 

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Mizell were held Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. William Pope officiating.  Special musical selections included, “In the Garden” rendered by cd and “Amazing Grace” accompanied by the attending congregation with Rev. William Pope accompanying on the guitar.  The interment followed in Sweetwater Cemetery in Pearson.

 

 

Serving as active pallbearers were Barry Mizell, Brian Mizell, Rodney Perry, Richie Mizell, Jeremy Womack and Preston Thomas.

 

 

Relihan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
