Dr. Ellen Fitzgerald has been appointed to the Georgia State Board of Optometry by Governor Brian Kemp. The board consists of six members, appointed to protect, promote, and preserve the public health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Georgia. They are responsible for the regulation of licensed optometrists in Georgia. Optometrists diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eyes, and associated structures, including the diagnosis of related systemic conditions.
Dr. Fitzgerald opened her private practice, Fitzgerald Family Eyecare, in Douglas, in 2005. She has been serving her hometown community as an Optometric Physician, a member of the Coffee County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Douglas Lions Club, and currently serves as a member of the Coffee Regional Medical Center hospital board of directors. Dr. Fitzgerald is an active member, and former board member, of the Georgia Optometric Association as well as a member of the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Fitzgerald was an honor graduate of Coffee High School. She earned an Associate of Science in Biology from South Georgia State College and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Valdosta State University. After college, she went on to obtain a Doctorate of Optometry at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. She has established a practice centered around the advanced care of ocular disease as well as primary eye care. She is passionate about her faith, her family, and the optometric profession. She and her husband Clay have two children, Aubree and Asher. Dr. Fitzgerald looks forward to this new appointment serving on the State Board of Optometry.
