The City of Douglas announced this week the Douglas Fire Department recently hired its first female firefighter in the organization's history.

Brandi Horton is from McRae and joined the firefighting team at the Douglas Fire Department after serving several years as a volunteer at Horse Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Telfair County.

When asked about how she felt being the first female firefighter for the City of Douglas, Brandi stated, “I consider it just another day at work and I do not want to be treated any differently because I am a female. I look forward to my career as a firefighter with the Douglas Fire Department.”

Brandi trained and took the Firefighter 1 Course to become a certified firefighter. Her training also includes HazMat Awareness and Operations.

The Douglas Fire Department operates three fire stations and employs 33 firefighters. The department is also home to the Region 8 HazMat team that requires firefighters to have 240 hours of training each year.
